Idli Sambar

Ingredients

Pressure Cook
1 cup toor dal
Seasoning
2 teaspoons oil
½ teaspoon mustard seeds
½ teaspoon cumin seeds
¼ teaspoon asafoetida
2 dried red chillies
Saute
2 onions, finely sliced
5 green chillies, slit
Simmer
2 tomatoes, roughly chopped
Curry leaves
½ teaspoon turmeric powder
Salt to taste
Add
Juice of 2 lemons
Garnish
Coriander

Method
  • Soak toor dal for 30 minutes and pressure cook it for 2 whistles. Muddle with a pestle once cool.
  • Heat oil in a sauce pan, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, dried red chillies, and asafoetida.
  • Once the mustard seeds have spluttered, add sliced onions and green chillies and saute.
  • Add the cooked dal, chopped tomatoes, curry leaves, turmeric powder, and salt to taste.
  • Adjust water for desired consistency and bring the sambar to a boil.
  • Simmer for a few minutes.
  • Remove from heat, add lemon juice and fresh coriander.
